Hope on the Horizon: Students Raise $9,300 for Addiction Recovery and Mental Health Support
In March and April of 2025, a passionate group of Algonquin College Public Relations students showed Ottawa what’s possible when creativity meets compassion.
As part of their semester, students in the Public Relations program planned and executed a campaign of fundraising events called Hope on the Horizon, in support of Rideauwood Addiction and Family Services. The initiative celebrated the program’s 40th anniversary of student-led community fundraising—and the legacy of giving back that continues to grow.
These emerging communications professionals used the skills they’ve gained to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and build support for individuals and families impacted by substance use and related mental health challenges.
And the results were nothing short of inspiring.

$9,300 Raised Across Seven Student-Led Events
In total, the Hope on the Horizon campaign raised $9,300 in support of Rideauwood’s work—funds that will directly support our programs and services across the region.
Each of the seven events was thoughtfully planned and brought its own energy and impact:
🎲 Board Gaming for Charity at Level One Game Pub
🪩 ‘80s Night dance party at LIVE! on Elgin
🍵 Pouring Positivity garden-themed tea party at Algonquin College
👕 Spring Clean for the Cause thrift sale fundraiser on campus
💎 The Ruby Reception, honouring Claudine Wilson and 40 years of PR program impact
🎨 Strike a Chord: Artist’s Alley with music, poetry, art, and open mic
🛼 Skate Away the Stigma: Roll for Recovery at Skate & Play Ottawa
Each event combined awareness, community-building, and fun—all in support of a meaningful cause. From roller skating and live music to tea parties and thrift sales, these students created inclusive, welcoming spaces that brought people together.
