YOUNG
ADULT PROGRAM
|
| In July of 1995, a Young Adult Program
was implemented at Rideauwood in an effort to meet the treatment
needs of clientele between the ages of 18 and 23 who were concerned
about their substance use. Since that time, the Young Adult Program
has provided professional counselling and related services to
this unique population. |
| |
| YOUNG
ADULT PROGRAM COMPONENTS |
| The Young Adult Program offers outpatient
substance abuse counselling and education to young adults through
a number of components. These include: |
| . Intake screening, consultation,
and referral |
| . Assessment for substance use
and mental health problems. |
| . Individual counselling |
| . Group counselling |
| . Case management services related
to counselling |
| |
| FOCUS
OF THE YOUNG ADULT PROGRAM |
| The primary focus of this program is
on facilitating change with clients who are concerned about their
alcohol or other drug use. The program works with clients to determine
their level of substance abuse, develop an individualized treatment
plan, and implement treatment goals through counselling and support.
Issues that are typically addressed within the program include
the following: |
| . Understanding the relationship
between alcohol/drug use and behaviour |
| . Understanding the pharmacological
effects of mood altering substances |
| . Identifying the consequences
of substance abuse |
| . Establishing a network of support
in recovery |
| . Implementing relapse prevention
plans |
| . Identifying personal strengths
and areas for development |
| . Coping with developmental transitions
(e.g. living independently, reentering school, sexuality, |
| |
entering the workforce, identifying career goals) |
| . Dealing with interpersonal issues
such as loss, trauma (e.g. abuse), family issues, depression,
relapse |
| |
prevention, spirituality, sexuality/identity issues,
intimate relationships, gambling |
| . In conjunction with other professionals:
co-occurring mental health problems eating disorders, dual |
| |
disorders, HIV/AIDS. |
| |
| APPROPRIATE
REFERRALS |
| Individuals early in recovery may benefit
from this outpatient service. This program has also proven to
be an appropriate aftercare/continuing care program for individuals
who have completed a residential chemical dependency program and
are seeking continued or additional support. The Young Adult Program
attempts to be as individualized and flexible as possible. Appropriate
referrals would meet the following general criteria: |
| . Be between the ages of 18 and
23, and a resident of Ontario.* |
| . Have an identified substance
abuse problem (and/or willingness to be assessed). |
| . Have a willingness to discuss
their substance abuse, the consequences of their drug using behaviour,
|
| |
and are contemplating change. |
| . Willingness to work with a
counsellor in individual therapy sessions. |
| . For those with a commitment
towards abstinence and requiring a full program: an ability to
work in a |
| |
weekly coed counselling group (currently Thursdays
from 4:30.6:30 p.m.). |
| . Commitment to healthy therapeutic
programming (including regular attendance, respect for |
| |
confidentiality, respectful group behaviour, appropriate
releases of information). |
| . Consultation and referral with
other mental health resources. |
| |
| REFERRAL
PROCESS |
| Interested Young Adults aged 18 to 23
can call the Rideauwood Intake Counsellor at 724-4881. After a
brief intake interview, the client will be contacted by the Young
Adult Program counsellor. A personal assessment (by Rideauwood
or other agency) will precede admission into the program.
|
| *At present, there is no fee to clients
for this program for Ontario residents. Out of province residents
should call to discuss our service. |
