FAMILY INTAKE SUPPORT GROUP

GOAL:
To offer immediate support, orientation and education in a group format to family members interested in accessing family member services.

OBJECTIVES:
. To provide information about Rideauwood's Family Member Programs for family members considering admission.
. To assist group members to identify and discuss ways in which their lives have been affected by another person's chemical dependency and to examine possible coping strategies.
. To provide a safe place for group members to share their feelings.
. To inform group members about other addiction services and about crisis services available in the community.
. To offer the support of the group and to inform group members about other available supports.

PROGRAM :
Family members can attend an open group held every Monday from 6:00 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. Generally, they are permitted to remain in the group, if desired, until spaces in other services become available and until they feel ready to be admitted to other phases of service. The program consists of group counselling and some education. The focus is on chemical dependency from the perspective of the family member. Group members are introduced to stress management and other helpful coping techniques. The group is led by an experienced Family Addictions Counsellor and (when available) a Counsellor's Aide.
