PARENT
EDUCATION ON ADDICTIONS
AND KIDS (PEAK)
|
| Parent Education on Addiction and Kids
(P.E.A.K.) is a 6-week long program of information and education
evenings designed to heighten awareness substance abuse, dependency,
and family recovery. The series is aimed at parents and others
who are concerned about a teen(s) who may be abusing alcohol and
/ or drugs. |
| |
| Having worked with chemically
families in Ottawa- Carleton since 1979, the Rideauwood Teen and
Parent Program has found that a strong educational base of knowledge,
focused on substance abuse and family life, can often motivate
families to insight and action. Foremost in the minds of most
parents are " How do we know?", "Where do we go?",
and "What can we do?" |
| |
| It is with these questions in mind that
Rideauwood Teen and Parent Program has developed the P.E.A.K.
Program: to urge parents to look beneath the surface of what may
be happening in their family. |
| |
| The six week evening group series focuses on key
facets of families and chemical dependency. |
| We attempt to: |
| . Educate families about the
substance use/abuse/addiction processes, and recovery involves.
|
| |
Myths and facts about substance abuse and addiction
are explored, as well as "normal" adolescent development.
|
| . Describe the progression of
chemical abuse to dependency in teens (as opposed to adults),
as |
| |
well as the signs and symptoms of substance abuse and the increasing
effects on the family. |
| . Explain resistance, fear (
or "denial" ) what prevents families from seeing substance
abuse? How? |
| |
am I affected? How do I affect others? |
| . Describe the behaviours that
families use to show their concern and how this feels for the
family |
| |
members. |
| . Provide tools to help families
deal with their and distress and get support for themselves. A
|
| |
discussion of the usefulness of 12 step and other self help
and support programs (such as Naranon and Alanon) is also pursued. |
| . Discern the difference between
constructive parenting techniques and attitudes, and |
| |
nonconstructive techniques and attitudes. Normal recovery hurdles
and expectations are also explored. |
| . Provide reasonable and practical
tools that enable families to intervene on substance abuse and
|
| |
regain control of their lives. Appropriate strategizing for
each family is seen as crucial. |
| . Provide information about the
various resources that deal with substance abuse and |
| |
dependency in the Ottawa-Carleton area and elsewhere. |
| . Provide clients in developing their own
personal recovery plans. |
